Most of the time when I ask one of my children to bake some cookies, this simple recipe is used. These cookies are definitely the most-loved cookie in our house!

We often mix up a large batch of these yummy cookies! We will then freeze half of the dough balls to bake later. You can bake these cookies from frozen whenever you need some freshly baked scrumptious treats! You can also freeze the already baked cookies.

The trick to tasty chocolate chip cookies is using butter, brown and white sugars and some golden syrup along with the other standard ingredients. The blend of sugars gives the caramel flavor and keeps these cookies from drying out. The syrup is the secret ingredient that makes these delicious cookies become slightly chewy! The other secret to the best chocolate chip cookies is to not overbake!!! They will actually look under cooked when you take them out of the oven, but will harden more once they cool down.

Ingredients for Chocolate Chip Cookies

  • Butter, I use salted for this recipe, make sure the butter is room temperature.
  • Brown sugar, this will help the cookies stay moist and adds great flavor.
  • White sugar
  • Golden syrup, or honey or corn syrup.
  • Vanilla extract, this recipe calls for lots…another trick to the best chocolate chip cookies.
  • Eggs, to provide structure and richness.
  • All purpose flour
  • Baking Soda
  • Salt
  • Chocolate chips, I usually use semi-sweet but you can use whichever kind you prefer whether it’s dark chocolate, milk chocolate, or a blend of the 3.

How to make Chocolate Chip Cookies

1.Preheat the oven to 350°F convection setting and line your baking sheet with parchment paper.

2.In a large bowl, beat the butter and both sugars until creamy.

3.Add the syrup, vanilla, and eggs. Mix well.

4.Add the flour, baking soda, salt, and chocolate chips. Mix until combined.

5.Scoop out small spoonfulls of dough onto the parchment paper lined baking sheet, leaving room to expand.

These are too close for baking, leave about 2 inches between. This pic is of dough balls ready to be frozen:)

6.Bake at 350°F for 7-8 minutes. Remember the centers will look under cooked, this is fine.

7.Allow to cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet before removing to a cooling rack.

Can I use melted butter for Chocolate Chip Cookies?

Not in this recipe. There are some recipes out there that call for melted butter, but do not melt the butter for this recipe. The cookies will turn out runny and way too flat. The recipes that call for melted butter also require you to chill the dough.

How do I know when my chocolate chip cookies are done baking.

The chocolate chip cookies should be browning on the outside edges but still look almost raw in the center when you remove them from the oven. They will continue to cook on the hot cookie tray for a few minutes so will harden as they cool.

What makes chocolate chip cookies soft and chewy?

Using more brown sugar than white sugar and not over baking will make your chocolate chip cookies soft and chewy!

Why do my chocolate chip cookies not spread out?

If your cookies are not spreading out, it probably means you added too much flour.
