Adults and children alike love Rice Crispies, yet I only seem to make them when we are having a crowd over. This recipe is so quick, like 10 minutes, so really no excuses for me not to make them more often! Plus, it is a timeless, classic, favorite recipe. Homemade always tastes the best, and this way, you can add the extra marshmallows for that ooey, gooey, sweet and sticky sensation.

Rice Krispies Treats Recipe

I wasn’t going to publish my recipe for Rice Krispie treats! Because, everyone knows how to make these right? The recipe is right on the box…Well…my recipe is just a little different but oh so much yummier than the one on the box. (if I must say so myself) What I’ve learned over the years is that adding the extra marshmallows and less cereal creates the best Crispy Rice squares ever! So, hopefully there’s someone out there newly learning to cook who could use this recipe for this classic dessert.

Ingredients for Rice Krispie Treats Recipe

  • Butter, I always use salted butter. If you only have unsalted, add a pinch of salt to the melted marshmallows. And, no, margarine will not taste as good.
  • Marshmallows, I use 80 large, or you could use 10 cups of miniature marshmallows. This amount of marshmallows is the perfect ratio of crisp rice cereal:marshmallows.
  • Vanilla Extract, this enhances the marshmallow flavor and adds the extra yum factor.
  • Rice Krispies cereal, or any brand of crisp rice cereal will do.

Note

  • Use fresh marshmallows, this is very important.
  • Gently press the finished mixture into the pan, don't pack too firmly.
  • Rub butter on your hands before pressing into the pan, or use a piece of parchment paper.
  • These freeze great, so if you want to save some for later, just seal in an airtight bag or container and freeze.
  • Keep the heat low when melting the marshmalllows.
  • Let the squares sit for 1 hour before cutting.
  • Don't overcook the marshmallows. Remove from the heat immediately once they're melted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Expand All:
Should I refrigerate my Rice Krispie Treats?

No, refrigerating will cause the crispy rice squares to get too hard. Store these Rice Krispie Treats in a sealed bag or container at room temperature.

Can you freeze Rice Crispy Treats?

Absolutely! I have frozen these rice krispie treats many many times. They taste just as yummy once you thaw them out as long as they were frozen in a sealed container or bag no longer than 4 months.

How long do Rice Krispie treats last?

These will last for up to 5 days at room temperature in an airtight bag or container, or up to 4 months in the freezer.

Why did my Rice Krispie Treats turn out hard?

Either you boiled the marshmallow mixture too long or it was too hot. Or you packed it in the dish too hard. Both of these things can cause rice crispy squares to become hard.
