These apple muffins are the best fall breakfast! I love Autumn and the smell of ripe apples as I walk in the neighborhood! Apple streusel muffins are one of our best loved breakfast muffin recipes. I use apples that are grown locally. Thankfully, we have kind and generous neighbors and family who have apple trees in their yards! These are quite tart and have an extremely appley taste. Of course, any tart and firm apple will work for this muffin recipe.

Quick, Easy Breakfast!

You will love these apple muffins for a quick, on the go breakfast. It’s so easy to bake up a double batch of Apple Streusel Muffins and have them in the freezer for busy mornings. So often, when my children were little and we had a busy day, our best breakfast, on the go, would be apple cinnamon muffins and cheese strings!

Freezing Tip

  • Once the muffins have completely cooled, place in a sealed bag or container. They will keep for up to 3 months.
  • When you want to thaw the apple streusel muffins, open the bag or container on the counter. This way the streusel won’t be soggy.

With a cinnamon, brown sugar, crumb topping, apple streusel muffins are so addictive. I don’t know why, but crumb streusel toppings just make muffins better! Just like the blueberry streusel muffins we also love!

The apples in these apple cinnamon muffins can be either grated or chopped in smalll pieces. I do prefer using pieces so that you get lots of juicy chunks of sweet and tart apples! The grated will be fine as well, it’s totally whichever way you like. 🤗 One benefit of grated apples is that you don’t have to peel them…

muffins are great!

Breakfast muffins make for a super easy and quick meal! Whether you are in a hurry or not, apple muffins with a cinnamon sugar streusel topping are a great snack, meal or even dessert! This apple muffin recipe is chock full of juicy apples, making it a healthy alternative to store bought sugar laden, tasteless breakfast muffins. Apple muffins are also a great lunch box item that most children totally love!

Baking tip I Learned About Muffins

I learned the best way to bake muffins! This method guarantees a high muffin top. It seems so hard to believe, but first you bake the muffins at a high, like, 425°F, temperature, then lower the temperature. Also, bake on the top half of the oven and do not open the door until the apple muffins are finished. This method makes a beautiful poofy top on the muffins! Trust me on this, I was leery to try this the first time too. But, it works!!

Apple Streusel Muffins Ingredients

  • Apples, use a firm, tart apple. I actually use the homegrown apples from trees here in Alberta. They are SO flavorful to use in these muffins and Caramel Apple Cake. Do take the time to peel your apples so that you don’t get tough peel pieces in your apple muffins.
  • Cooking oil, milk, egg, vanilla, the other liquid ingredients.
  • Dry ingredients are flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and of course cinnamon.
  • The topping consists of brown sugar, flour, butter, and cinnamon.

why use oil instead of butter in apple streusel muffins?

Have you noticed that a lot of muffin recipes call for oil instead of butter? Although I usually prefer butter in almost everything, there is actually a really good reason to use cooking oil when baking apple cinnamon muffins or any other muffin recipe! The oil will keep your finished muffin moist!!! The oil essentially traps the gases which are released from the baking soda or powder and slows down gluten formation. This will ensure the best muffin recipe ever!

Use cold butter for the streusel.

Don't overmix the batter, just mix until combined for the fluffiest muffins.

Make sure not to overfill the muffin cups, so that your streusel doesn't spill over.

Follow the baking instructions for a wonderfully rounded muffin top!

Remove the apple streusel muffins from the muffin tins as soon as you can. Leaving them in will make them stick because of the moisture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Expand All:
What kind of apples are best for apple streusel muffins?

Local big apples, not crabapples are great! Also, granny smith or other hard apples are delicious. If you want a sweeter apple, try Gala.

What is the best way to store apple streusel muffins?

The best way to store muffins to keep them fresh tasting is to place in a sealed bag or container and freeze them. Otherwise, they will keep for up to 4 days on the counter in a sealed container or bag. The streusel topping will become soft after they have been sealed in a bag for a day, so these muffins are best eaten the same day.

Why did my muffins become so dense?

If you overmix the batter, muffins will become dense and tough. This is why you just mix the dry ingredients only enough to incorporate and no more.

What temperature do you bake muffins at?

Bake at 425°F for 6 minutes in a pre-heated oven, then lower the temperature to 350°F, without opening the oven door, and bake for another 7-9 minutes until they test done.

How can you tell that the Apple Streusel Muffins are finished baking?

When a toothpick or knife inserted into the middle of the muffin comes out clean, they are finished baking.
