Homemade hamburger helper is a true comfort food. This dinner idea is made with easily found ingredients and can be made with variations. If you don’t like mushrooms, just leave them out. You can use cream instead of milk, to make it even creamier. If you don’t have an onion, just use onion powder, or you could add chopped garlic if you prefer. The type of pasta can also be switched up. The versatility of this recipe is amazing!
Ingredients
- Ground Beef, use extra lean so that you don’t have to drain the fat.
- Onion, chopped, will add moisture and flavor.
- Mushrooms, sliced, or if you have to trick youngsters into eating them, chop them very small.
- Bowtie noodles, or rotini, macaroni, wide egg noodles, or medium shells, whichever type of pasta you have.
- Milk
- Water
- Cornstarch, added when the milk and water are still cold.
- Beef bouillon, whichever brand you prefer.
- Salt, pepper
- Sour cream, this will be added at the very end of cooking and is what causes the stroganoff flavor!
How to Make Hamburger Helper Stroganoff
1.Add the ground beef and the onion to a large skillet. Cook on medium heat until there is no pink in the meat.
2.Add the mushrooms, bouillon, salt and pepper.
3.Add the milk, water and cornstarch. Stir in well. Heat until the milk and water mixture is hot.
4.Add the noodles and stir.
5.Cover this mixture with a lid and simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring every few minutes.
6.When the noodles are cooked, add the sour cream and stir in. If the hamburger helper is runny, letting it sit 5 minutes before serving will thicken it up.
