Everyone looks forward to supper when they know that these mouth-watering homemade burgers are on the menu! Nothing says summer quite like hamburgers being grilled, although we actually fire up the barbecue in every season. According to my family, this is the best burger recipe out there! The smell of these tasty and flavorful homemade hamburgers being grilled is tempting enough that you wonât have to call more than once when supper is ready.
History of Hamburgers
Of course the hamburger was invented in the United States! Makes sense doesn't it? Not to mention it is still the most popular fast food eaten there. The humble hamburger is keeping it's popularity even with more and more people eating healthier. But, hey, homemade burgers are healthy!! If you want to read an interesting timeline of the invention of the hamburger, this article is for you: The History of the Hamburger from Ancient Rome to the Drive-Thru!
Ingredients For Flavorful Homemade Hamburgers
These homemade burgers are juicy, tender and full of flavor.Â
The pork in the mixture keeps the fresh burgers from being tough or dry and adds that slightly different flavor. If you donât have ground pork, you can use lean, not extra lean ground beef to keep them moist. Â
The chopped onion adds flavor and moisture to these burgers.
Seasoning salt, I love Lawry's but whichever is your favorite.
The secret ingredient in this recipe is the Ritz crackers.
How to make Flavorful Homemade Hamburgers
1.Place the chopped onion, crushed ritz crackers, eggs, onion, and seasoning salt in a large bowl and stir.
2.Add the ground beef and mix well. Measure 1/3-1/2 cup amounts of meat and shape into patties.
3.Grill on a hot barbecue for approximately 3-4 minutes per side. Add sliced cheese when just done if you prefer cheeseburgers.
Tips For Shaping Fresh Burgers
When you shape these flavorful homemade hamburgers, there are a couple of tricks to keep them from turning into thick patties and to keep them tender.Â
First of all, when you mix the ingredients, incorporate them gently by hand.Â
Then, I use a ½ cup measuring cup to measure equal amounts and shape them by hand. If you want a smaller patty, just use a smaller measuring cup.Â
Next, as you are flattening the burgers in your hand, try to keep the middle thinner than the outside. This will help them to stay flat even when they shrink up while cooking.Â
Finally, do not pack them too tightly together, as they will stay together fine with the egg and crumbs that are added in the recipe.
These simple burgers are best grilled, but still delicious fried. Leftover homemade hamburgers can make a quick and tasty lunch when reheated. Serve these with my delicious Light and Fluffy Homemade Honey Buns or Tasty Garlic Cheese Buns for an even more scrumptious treat!
This recipe is quick and easy to prepare and the fresh burgers only take a few minutes per side to cook so I really should be making it more often! This meal is a favorite of teenagers and young adults and it will surprise you how many homemade hamburgers will get eaten if you serve these at your next barbecue event!
How to Freeze Homemade Burgers
The handy thing about making homemade burgers is that you can make them up any time in advance of your event and freeze them. Just layer the burgers with parchment paper so that they are easy to take apart. Wrap tightly in plastic once they are frozen solid. They will keep for 3 months once frozen. Grill the homemade hamburgers from frozen.
