Easy Cheesy Sauce for Broccoli is a very simple yet tasty sauce for broccoli. It is also delicious on cauliflower, baked potatoes or anything else you want a creamy, cheesy sauce for. This recipe is the secret why my family loves broccoli!
I guess this recipe was developed to help children (and adults) eat more broccoli. Broccoli is so good for you so anything that helps us eat more is great! We used to buy the packaged Hollandaise sauces but they are expensive and not always in the cupboard. So I made up this simple recipe in place of Hollandaise sauce on broccoli. We never buy the packaged sauce mixes anymore, that’s how much we love this recipe!
Ingredients
- Butter:Start with melted butter to make a roux
- Flour: To thicken the sauce
- Milk: The base for the sauce
- Parmesan: Intense cheese flavor
- Cheddar Cheese:More cheese flavor also coloring so that your sauce isn’t white
Onion Powder: Just a hint of onion flavor. If you prefer garlic, use garlic powder or if you just want a plain cheese sauce leave this out altogether.
Honestly, this recipe takes only about 5 minutes to make once your pan is warmed up! Leftovers also store well in a sealed container in the fridge. I usually just quickly make this sauce once almost everything else is done for the meal. The cheesy goodness of this sauce seems to make broccoli disappear!
Tips for making Easy Cheesy Sauce for Broccoli
- use freshly shredded cheddar, pre-shredded does not melt as good
- Do not let the milk get too hot while making, keep it just under boiling
- Add the cheese to a warm, not hot mixture
- Stir often so as not to scorch
- When reheating, stir in a bit of milk as it is warming up
