The sour cream and buttermilk in mini donuts recipe ensures a super moist, light, and airy donut. Mini donuts made with sour cream do NOT taste like sour cream. They have a rich, crunchy-on-the-outside, yet fluffy-on-the-inside texture. The flavor is rich, cakey, with a hint of cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla.
Super Easy No Fuss Recipe
Mini Donuts Recipe is super easy. There is no need to chill the dough, or use special flour. There is no complicated mixing instructions or waiting for the donuts to rise before frying!
Ingredients in Mini Donuts Recipe
- Eggs
- Granulated sugar
- Sour cream, regular or light will work. I use the 14% fat for the richest batter.
- Buttermilk, or sour milk, which is 1 tsp of vinegar and milk to make 1/2 cup.
- Vanilla extract
- All purpose flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt for the dry ingredients.
- Oil for deep frying, the amount will depend on whether you are using a deep fryer or a deep saucepan. I used a deep fryer so used a whole jug of canola oil.
- Cinnamon sugar mixture, or powdered sugar for coating.
How to Make Mini Donuts Recipe
1.Beat the eggs in a large bowl until frothy. Then, beat in sugar. Add the sour cream, buttermilk, and vanilla and mix well.
2.In a seperate bowl, stir the flour, baking powder, nutmeg, cinnamon, and salt together.
3.Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir just to moisten.
4.Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface. It should be thin, about 1/4-1/2 inch thick. Cut with a 2" diameter biscuit cutter. Tear a small hole in the center with your fingers.
5.Deep fry a few at a time in hot 375°F (190°C) fat until browned on both sides. You will have to flip them part way through the cooking.
6.Remove with a slotted spoon onto paper towels. Stand on edge to drain any excess oil.
7.Place either a cinnamon sugar mixture or powdered sugar in a small bowl. Put 2-3 donuts at a time in the bowl and shake them until coated. Then put the finished sugared donuts on a seperate plate or tray.
