The best light and fluffy homemade honey buns for dinner rolls or hamburger buns.
The smell of fresh buns baking is one of the most comforting and homey smells there is. It seems like every time I bake a batch of these homemade buns there will be some snitching right off the cooling rack. Then, to smother with butter melting into the fluffy interior of the bun! I myself have even been one of these fresh bun snitchers from time to time…I often make half of this recipe as dinner rolls and the other half as hamburger buns.
Memories
Whenever I bake buns, my mind is flooded with memories. The memories of baking with my grandma when I was young and would get to spend a weekend out at the farm. My grandma patiently would let me hover over her in the kitchen as she was baking. The fun part would come when it was time to shape the buns. She calmly taught me the way to shape them properly which did take a lot of practise for a 10 year old! These, and other kitchen tutorials were some of the fondest and treasured times that I had with my grandma. We forged so many wonderful memories in the kitchen! She passed away about 10 years ago but these kitchen reminiscences are still so fresh.
History of Light and Fluffy Homemade Honey Buns
The other memory that plays through my mind when I bake these homemade buns is where I got this recipe. I have a dear friend named Kari, a busy homeschooling mom of 5, who always bakes fresh buns for her family. We eagerly looked forward to lunch dates at Kari’s, with my 6 homeschoolers, and her 5 and other friends along. Lunch would always include these delicious homemade buns! I finally got the recipe from her after the first few times of oohing and aahing and devouring these mouth watering rolls at her place. Then, because I don’t usually have margarine in my house, I switched the margarine to butter and the sugar in the recipe to honey. Either way you make these homemade buns is equally delicous!
This recipe is large but you can easily make half of the batch. I find they stay fresh if you freeze them as well. These honey buns taste just as good once they are thawed. Whether you want fresh, homemade buns to go along with soup or stew, to have them with your favorite sandwich topppings, as hamburger buns to go with juicy homemade hamburgers, or just to eat as a snack with butter and jam or honey, this recipe will be a sure hit!

Add the butter, honey, salt, and the flour 1 cup at a time.

Shape into buns and place on greased baking pan. If you want hamburger buns press the buns down.
