Note

Make sure the water is only warm, not hot, before adding the yeast. If it is too hot, it will kill the yeast.

Consider making a double batch of this recipe and freezing half of them before baking.

Ice the cinnamon rolls when still warm, but not immediately after taking them out of the oven. This will cause the glaze to run down among the rolls. Then the glaze hardens a bit as it cools.

Use softened, not melted butter for the filling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Expand All:
What is the difference between cinnamon buns and cinnamon rolls?

Generally, cinnamon rolls do not have any nuts or raisins added to them. Cinnamon buns are cinnamon rolls with additional ingredients such as nuts and raisins added to them.

How do I keep Cinnamon Rolls soft?

Don't overknead the dough.

Don't add too much flour.

Store in an airtight container or bag.

Use butter that has been softened, not melted for the filling.

Do Cinnamon Rolls need to rise twice?

Some recipes do instruct you to let the dough rise twice but this recipe for Easy Homemade Cinnamon Rolls does not require that. You do not need a finer crumb texture in cinnamon rolls like you do for bread so rising only once actually causes the cinnamon rolls to be lighter and fluffier.

Are cinnamon rolls better baked before being frozen or better frozen raw and then baked?

If cinnamon rolls are frozen before baking them they will taste like fresh out of the oven when they are cooked. Freezing cinnamon buns after baking can cause them to dry out somewhat when you reheat them. We definitely prefer to freeze them raw and let them proof overnight before baking in the morning.

What icing do you put on cinnamon rolls?

Either a simple vanilla glaze with butter, cream, icing sugar, and vanilla, or, cream cheese icing with cream cheese, vanilla, and icing sugar. These are both great and very tasty icings for Cinnamon Rolls.
